Intern Development Program (IDP)Most NCARB jurisdictions, including Oregon, require completion of the IDP Program prior to registration as an architect. Your participation in this internship reflects your commitment to acquiring the comprehensive training essential for the competent practice of architecture. IDP involves receiving advice/guidance from practitioners, and an electronic record-keeping system to demonstrate/document your activities. IDP also involves accumulating minimum training in several subject areas; such as design and construction documents, construction contract administration, management and related activities, as well as elective units from any category to suit each individual's needs, and 15 core competencies. At any time after you complete your first professional degree from a NAAB accredited program of architect and establish an IDP record with NCARB, you may apply to Oregon to begin taking the Architectural Registration Examination (ARE). As a candidate, you must decide what is best in your circumstances - whether to take ARE and IDP simultaneously or when to begin and complete the ARE in relationship to IDP. However, if you have already completed the IDP program you cannot be considered for early eligibility into the ARE. NCARB requires interns to submit training hours in reporting periods of no longer than six months. This is designed to improve both the accuracy of reporting and the overall IDP experience - making it more constructive and valuable, and helping to reduce the amount of time it takes interns to complete IDP. This also helps prevent interns from being surprised by where they are in their internship. The six-month rule is already in effect for those interns who began an NCARB record on or after 7/1/09. The six-month rule will go into effect on 7/1/2010 for those who have established an NCARB record before 7/1/09. Training reports must be submitted electronically through NCARB's e-EVR system. Interns enter their own information into this system and supervisors may also review and approve the report electronically. To comply with the six-month rule, interns must submit the IDP report within two months of completion of each reporting period. Interns can enter their training hours over any lesser timeframe (weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc.). Training reports may be saved online as works in progress and submitted for their supervisor's review at a later date. Once interns have submitted their training by entering them into their NCARB record online, their supervisor is automatically notified via email that a report is available for review and approval. That training report is protected while any loose ends are tied up. Interns will not be affected by any delay caused by their supervisor or NCARB. However, training can be lost if it is deemed invalid by the supervisor or if it is not earned in accordance with the IDP rules. Interns can check their IDP progress at any time through the NCARB web site by logging on to "My NCARB Record". They will be able to see which training has been completed, which is pending supervisor approval, and which area still requires additional documentation. Also available through NCARB is the IDP Program Guidelines. Supervisors of interns may click here for a copy of the IDP supervisor guidelines. Below are some sites that are informational.
