Alternative Path to Licensure: Broadly Experienced Architect (BEA)

Normally, for reciprocity to Oregon from other jurisdictions, an applicant must be NCARB-certified (which requires a degree from a NAAB accredited architectural program). There is another path to licensure; however, without that educational requirement.

In 1997, NCARB established what is called the Broadly Experienced Architect (BEA) program, to assist architects without the NAAB-accredited degree to become licensed in other jurisdictions by reciprocity. To be eligible for this program, architects must have been licensed and practicing architecture for at least ten years.

BEA eligibility requirements:

  • Registration with one of NCARB's member boards for at least ten years;
  • In responsible charge, as a registered architect, of a comprehensive practice of architecture for at least ten years.

The BEA certification process has three stages:

  1. Establish an NCARB record;
  2. Submit an EESA-NCARB education evaluation; and
  3. Complete an interview with an NCARB Committee.

If the NCARB Committee determines the applicant has satisfied all requirements for certification, the applicant will be issued an NCARB Certificate. Oregon will consider the information once it receives the NCARB certificate and the reciprocity application/fee.

If the NCARB Committee determines the education dossier was not verified in the interview, the applicant may take additional courses or acquire learning through additional experience and reapply for certification through NCARB.

The BEA program is a comprehensive evaluation of an architect's education and professional experience. It is time consuming and the cost is not small. For more information or to begin this process, you can check NCARB's web site or contact NCARB directly at 202-783-6500.
