Oregon Board of Architect Examiners 205 Liberty St. NE, Suite A Salem, OR 97301-1035 Phone: (503) 763-0662 FAX: (503) 364-0510
In accordance with the ORS 671.080, every person who desires to practice the profession of architecture in the State of Oregon must maintain an active and current registration with the Oregon Board of Architect Examiners. You may, however, elect to place your registration on inactive status if you do not intend to practice architecture in Oregon. You must make your request while you hold an active license, or within 60 days after the expiration of your active license. The Board has two categories to choose from. If you meet the qualifications, please complete the attached form and return it to the Board office within the deadline.
- Inactive Status: This status allows an architect, who is not practicing in Oregon and who is in good standing, to be placed on inactive status. Architects are not required to request this status. Those who fail to successfully renew within the established deadlines will automatically be placed in this status. An architect whose license is in inactive status may not practice or use the architect title. Those in inactive status may reinstate back to active status (the criteria for reinstatement may be found under OAR 806-010-0060, and OAR 806-010-0145). Individuals may not resume the practice of architecture until such time as the Board grants reinstatement to active status.
- Architect Emeritus: Architects who are active and in good standing with the Board, may be considered for Architect Emeritus (retired) status. According to OAR 806-010-0130, in order to be eligible for consideration, the architect must:
- be at least 60 years old,
- have practiced architecture in Oregon for a period of not less than 20 years, and
- have been an Oregon resident and licensed by this Board for at least five (5) consecutive years during the architect's active architectural practice in Oregon.
Those granted this status, may use the "Architect Emeritus" title after their name on any plaques, signs, or letterhead. Those granted this status may not practice architecture in any form. An Architect Emeritus may not resume the practice of architecture until such time as the Board grants reinstatement to active status. The criteria for reinstatement may be found under OAR 806-010-0130, OAR 806-010-0060, and OAR 806-010-0145.
